British
Aerospace $700 Million Hawk Deal Sealed

Last week British Aerospace, after meetings with the Australian
Prime Minister, announced that it would receive a $700 million
order for Hawk fighter aircraft. The order for 33 Hawks resulted
from the Royal Australian Air Force's selection of BAe last
winter as the preferred contender.

As is typical of most
international orders, British Aerospace is involved with
Australian firms in teaming relationships. As a result, 21 of
the Hawks will be built in Australia. The company said a new BAe
plant will be built in England to satisfy the contract. The
actual contract is expected to be inked this week in Australia,
probably on July 1. The date is particularly notable since there
are at least three major events affecting the aerospace industry
slated to occur. The German Cabinet is expected to vote on a
budget which should include the Eurofighter and the proposed Boeing-McDonnell Douglas merger may gain
approval by the US Federal Trade Commission, both on Tuesday.
