Airlines
have $4.4 billion in profits to look forward to in
1997
According to the
International Air Transport Association (IATA), airlines can look forward
to a collective, before-tax profit of $4.4 billion for 1997 on-scheduled
international services compared to last year's $4.0 billion.
In 1995, the comparative figure was $5.1 billion.
The forecast is based on all-available information and is the middle
range for estimates ranging from $7.2 billion to $2.1 billion.
One IATA official said that traffic and capacity could increase in 1997
by about seven percent and 7.5 percent. In 1996, traffic and capacity rose
by 8.4 percent and 7.9 percent. At the same time, average yields fell by
2.5 percent with unit costs decreasing at a slower rate of one percent.
