Indonesia
To Buy Russian Fighters
The government of Indonesia, deterred in their effort to buy
F-16 fighters by U.S. pressure, will buy Russian fighter
aircraft instead.
Several members of the U.S. Congress had become vocal
opponents to the F-16 transaction, citing Indonesia's poor
record on human rights. The Indonesian government finally
announced at the first of the month that it would no longer seek
to purchase the nine Lockheed Martin aircraft.
One week later, a particularly large contingent from the
Indonesian military was seen making the rounds at the Paris Air
Show.
An Indonesian military delegation is in Moscow this week,
with a deal expected to be announced within the next two weeks.
No word on specific aircraft of interest to the Indonesians
but presumably any shortlist would include the MiG 29 and Sukhoi
32.
