Lucas Announces $500 Million A340 Parts Deals

Farnborough, England - Lucas Aerospace has been awarded several contracts worth a combined $520 million to supply a major portion of the primary and secondary flight controls and thrust reverser actuation on the Airbus A340-500 and –600.

"This is an excellent win for Lucas Aerospace as it reinforces our market position as a leading supplier of actuation systems,'' said Ken Maciver, President of Lucas Aerospace. "We are extremely excited about the program, which has already picked up very substantial launch customers."

Lucas will supply the trimmable horizontal stabilizer actuator and rudder servo control actuator on the primary flight controls, the slat system on the secondary flight controls, and the nacelle thrust reverser actuators. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2001.

The four-engine Airbus A340-500 and -600 are the extended-range and higher-capacity versions of the A340-300 aircraft. The stretched -600 will carry 380 passengers in three classes up to 7,500 n.m. The -500 will have a shorter fuselage than the -600 and more range than any other airliner. It will carry 313 passengers in three classes up to 8,500 n.m.

The 320 million pound total for the airframe work includes series production and anticipated aftermarket sales. The contracts are in addition to Lucas' role, announced earlier this year, in supplying engine controls to Rolls Royce for the Trent Engine.
